Silverfish Identification & Prevention

What are silverfish?

Silverfish are wingless insects that have six legs, antennae, and are about ¾ of an inch long. Silverfish also have three bristle-like tails, metallic scales, and flattened teardrop-shaped bodies. Although they are flightless, these nocturnal insects are fast movers.

Are silverfish dangerous?

Among the many different pests in the Sacramento area that cause problems for homes and businesses, silverfish are one of the least dangerous, though their appearance may suggest otherwise. While this is true, silverfish can still trigger allergies with the waste they create. This pest is also known for its destructive behaviors.

Silverfish have an extensive diet that includes coffee, cotton, vegetables, sugars, and linens. They are big fans of starchy foods and will ruin any items that have glue elements.

Why do I have a silverfish problem?

Silverfish don’t thrive indoors, but they will look for a place to hide when the temperature drops. You likely don’t realize just how many ways pests like silverfish can get into your home. The most common entry points for these household invaders are cracks in the foundation and exterior walls, gaps around window and door frames, and damaged screens.

Where will I find silverfish?

If you have silverfish on your property, you might find them under rocks, potted plants, leaf piles, and garbage cans outdoors. Inside, you will find them in storage areas, sheds, attics, bathrooms, basements, and under sinks.
